If you've been following the posts today regarding "Super 8" and it's viral campaign, you know that there is somewhat of a countdown going on over at www.scariestthingieversaw.com and the big question is, what will the screen show when the countdown ends? Well you don't have to wait until then to find out... kind of.
Someone in an IRC channel associated with unfiction (if you know who please let me know so I can give them credit) managed to download the .swf file from that website and pull out what will happen at the end of the cycle. It doesn't give us any clues as to what really happens next, but you can at least see what the screen will look like at the end of it. So I don't think this is too much of a spoiler of anything. The only thing I can gather from this screenshot is that the "AF" in "AF FILE LIBRARY" may stand for Air Force, which would make my assumption that D. Morris stands for Dan Morris, since he was a Master Sergeant in the Air Force.
I hope this ARG will be just as good (if not better) than the Cloverfield one. so far it’s good though
I’m using MozillaFireFox on an iMac …
I have my security settings on high.
After cruising through scariestthingieversaw.com, I noticed I could not call up “PAGE INFO” (located under my “tools” tab); this has never happened before.
I ran my “error console” and found quite a few errors with this info located at the top of the event log:

Just thought you might like to know as I have followed the Cloverfield viral from the beginning and no such errors had occurred.

Something that is also interesting, but maybe unrelated, is that “DD” and “CL” are both ship classifications. “DD” = Destroyer and “CL” = Cruiser. Just a thought.
So I don’t know much about computers, and know even less about computer programing, but a couple of things are catching my atention and I don’t know if they are just computer stuff or JJ stuff. The first is NOSCOPE. It comes up a couple times on the screen as SET TT: NOSCOPE. Also if you hit shift + tab to scroll through the icons at the bottom if you go too far 3 yellow boxes show up on the green text screen. Last The date Feb 5th 1977 shows up when the program is first loading. Wikipedia says a swedish physicist that came up with a theory of extra dimensions died on that day. Anything??
I dont no if it has stated yet but at the very begining when your at a “linux” screen. If you move the window there is a print now feature. You print it and it states after you print.
“Stop posting publicly. I can answer your questions.
I have proof.
>>>>”
Neat.
I did the shift tab thing that Spoonz mentions to get the yellow boxes. After that though, when I click on any of the buttons on the linux screen, at the bottom, I get this weird synthesizer sound. I am not sure if that sound was there initially or not. Can anyone confirm?
hah dude figured out the boxes. It’s the tabs on the print screen thats behind the green text screen. I guess they just show through.
Guys, The bytes that are downloaded are not the same time. What if this counts as people that seen the site. How more people see the site how faster it’s done. This is the perfect way to create a hype though.
It couldent be a counter for people, cuz i have been stairing at the screen for about 20 mins now (i kno … no life alert. hahaha) and it goes at a rate (for my computer) 1 bit every 2, to 3 seconds. if it was a counter for people viewing the sight, it would go up alot faster, and not at a constent rate. In my oppinion it is a deffinate sign of a counter counting up to something. But to what as we dont know. I also notised, there are 20 sets of [] squares. not sure what that has to do with anything, or if it has to do with anything. just something i knotised. atm im at 60180 and on line 9. not sure if there is a pattern or not here.
And what is this?
http://www.scariestthingieversaw.com/time.php
So i noticed that it says “STALOG AF” quite a few times. So I started to wonder, what in the heck is “STALOG”? Well it turns out it’s an army term. Defined: http://www.yourdictionary.com/abbreviation/stalog
Has anybody been watching as the countdown for a particular file is completed?
I think there are twenty chances to see a file of some sort, and once its been accessed, it cant be seen again.
Thank god for JJ. The guy is a freakin genius at making trailers, and getting people all pumped up. I haven’t been this happy and pumped since Clover. YAY
Saturate, that shows the current UNIX time.
@Saturate, how did you find that?
and @Jarod what the hell is unix time. I tried looking it up but its way to confusing. English please?
This is definitely a counter of some sorts. When I first accessed the page at home, it said (don’t quote me on actual numbers) something around 11521 bytes loaded……Today, While at work, never accessing the site before on this computer, I loaded the program again and Immediately the number was way higher. It is at 125024 on first launch here at work. This is a definate sign of a counter.
I just want to point out one thing about this screen. How do we know what option this leads to? We obviously have three options at the end of the countdown. What if this is the result of choosing the wrong one. What if the “print” option prints something that is a huge clue?
@Ryan, What if each option leads to a different clue?
If you enter .PRINT RSCOM8 you can print two pages from an old newspaper with an ad about Rocket Poppeteers!
How on Earth did you discover teh “.PRINT RSCOM8” command?
Found it on a website, some guy figured it out

Awesome stuff!
if you hit “N” at the beginning you get the following text:
“Copyright 1977, DAC Acton, Mass.
THIS SOFTWARE IS FURNISHED TO A PURCHASER UNDER A LICENSE FOR USE ON A SINGLE COMPUSER SYSTEM AND CAN BE COPIED ONLY FOR USE IN SUCH A SYSTEM, EXCEPT AS MAY OTHERWISE BE PROVIDED IN WRITING BY DAC OF ACTON, MASS, U.S.A.
VERSION 05.5
D. MORRIS 05-FEB-77”
Acton, Mass is damn close to Hanscom Airforce Base, about 30 minutes drive. Of Hanscom in the late 70’s and early 80’s, Wikipedia had this to say:
“Hanscom arguably came to the greatest prominence in the 1970s and 1980s with the development of groundbreaking aircraft surveillance equipment. The first major achievement came in the development of an airborne radar system… While ESD’s first radar systems were ground-based, in the 1960s it had started to focus on overcoming the “ground clutter” problem. These efforts came to fruition in the 1970s, when ESD introduced the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), which represented a technological achievement for airspace surveillance. AWACS’ defining saucer-shaped radar is now able to simultaneously track up to 300 airborne and ocean-going targets up to 250 miles (400 km) away.”
Also of note, a year before marks the point in Jan ’76 where Hanscom activated a division program under AFGL (Air Force Geophysics Laboratory called the Microwave Physics and Solid State Sciences Division.
Several interesting things are notable:
1) The mention of Hanscom and its focus on airspace surveillance. If we’re talking about Area 51, we definitely have something to do with saucers or aliens. If these creatures were to escape the train cars, as the trailer suggests, it would certainly warrant airspace surveillance.
2) The “DAC” (automation) might allude to a device that converts digital signals into a continuous electrical signal suitable for input to an analog computer, or a means of restricting access to objects.
3) This DAC brings up a similar word as in “STALOG”, referenced by ThePostman above. STALOG refers to Study of Automation of the Logistic System.
4) In 1977 Hanscom proved directly linked to MIT’s Lincoln Labs, as Dr. Gerald P. Dinneen was elected Assistant Secretary of Defense. He focused on mathematics without boundaries, leading studies in the design and development efforts for a new air defense system, which combined the emerging digital computer, data communications, and radar technologies. He also was fascinated with the precursors to artificial intelligence.
5) D. Morris might very well stand for Dan Morris, who “is a retired Air Force career Master Sergeant who was involved in the extraterrestrial projects for many years. After leaving the Air Force, he was recruited into the super-secret National Reconnaissance Organization, or NRO, during which time he worked specifically on extraterrestrial-connected operations. He had a cosmic top-secret clearance (38 levels above top secret) which, he states, no U.S. president, to his knowledge, has ever held.”
It’s safe to say, with all this reference to “AF” and Area 51 we’re dealing with the airforce and potential mysterious aircraft. Does it have to do with early computer automation systems? Are aliens involved, or just aircraft? Put the rest of the puzzle together yourselves!
Can’t wait to see more about this film…..the trailer looks utterly amazing….its gonna be the bizz.!!
This is quite a lot of information, and I’m a bit overwhelmed.
I never understood how you all interpret all the viral stuff. When the Cloverfield virals came out, I was completely lost and had to just step back and watch everyone else having fun with it. I was hoping that when the sequel came out I’d finally have a chance to be there at the very beginning, instead of being left in the dust like last time. But here we are at the beginning of this new viral stuff and I’m TOTALLY lost.
This is amazing. I have been following this for a couple of days and am transfixed. ARG’s are a new thing to me. But the way I understand it is that a creative person researches a story/film/script, comes up with a workable plot/story/project and then takes the audience on the creative process. What happens is that over the course of a year(in this case) the creator takes the audience on the journey they took to create the product- with some added bonus features which reward the hard work (Poppeteers, slusho, etc) so that when the product arrive the audience aren’t watching a film/reading a story, they are actually experiencing the end product of a creative process they have had a tour of.
For example, Paul Bennewitz recorded so called alien transmissions and recorded video- on Super 8- of so called visitations and experiments from 79 to 86 before he had a breakdown. He believed aliens lived in underground bases on the planet and were experimenting on us. he was given a grant by the USAF to carry on his work. Now, I know this only because I’ve googled the info from the trailers, dates, area 51 and all the clues that we have already. I have also read a lot more stuff in this field- BUT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE VIRAL CAMPAIGN. So when I see the film I will be aware of the alternate universe this film is set in, i will understand where the info has been dug up from, what research the writer has completed to inform his finished piece. When I watch the film I will not be watching an hour and a half of celluloid, I will be watching a universe I have invested many hours in understanding.
My belief is that JJ Abrahms, or whoever wrote this, is very much into the alternate history of America as presented in UFO mythology and therefore wants us to be into it too, if only to make our enjoyment of the finished product more inclusive, to make us feel we are part of the universe presented.
This is literally the future. We create our own realities, imagination is the be all and end all of human existence. Who controls the imagination controls the human. The best way to make someone see what you are seeing is to make them experience what you have experienced.
I am now, and forever, in love with ARGs. I’m going to be with this until the end. I am also going to try and see what makes a successful ARG and what makes a rubbish one. This is beauty, plain and simple. i salute the marketing team JJ Abrahms uses- they have you, as well as me, using our imagination to get into theirs- and that is a difficult thing. Also, they assume we are intelligent, which most entertainment doesn’t, and for that I am grateful. We all need problems to solve, and sometimes life is too easy- you work and you can eat and pay rent, it isn’t difficult- so we need these games to keep us occupied, to keep our brains happy, to make us feel like our education wasn’t a total waste.
Don’t try and figure it out- most of us won’t, most of us will just read the updates and follow the trail led by others who may or may not be real- who knows who is the first to figure out these things, they may all be lackeys and parts of the marketing plan- most of us are happy to follow a trail of breadcrumbs and try and work out the end product from the clues and signposts given- we know that no matter what there will be a film next summer so this is all just a time wasting exercise, and a beautiful and intricate one at that, so just enjoy, read, learn and fill your head with the appropriate mythos, because it is the journey that matters, the build up, if you do it well enough it means the film will be an event that is truly life affirming, an event which makes us happy to be a puzzle solving ape, an event which takes us beyond the realms of the given world.
ARGs make believers of players. Long may they exist and grow. before long life itself will be indistinguishable from a crossword, a series of clues that build up to a product.
Also, if the creature/ super human is already in the train, how come the trailer says they arrive at this point? Surely if the creature/super human is in the trailer it has already arrived?
Basically, H.P Lovecraft has a lot to answer for.
hey about that thing whith morries there hapen to be a date when u first get on there and when u hit no the first time there is a date morries 5-feb-77 just before the train reck and i google the date and came up whit a link it verry niffty and if you dont mind tack a look at it its something about impregnateing andsome kind of sugery it took me a heck of a long time so here the link http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1604516/pdf/brmedj00448-0054b.pdf
Sounds cool but seriously mind the spelling it made my head hurt XD
idk if anyone has noticed this yet but when u move all the windows, even the one that asks you to print. there is a folder with a .dat file in it. it wont open but someone has to be able to figure it out.
@KHAOS
Really??????????????? Did you also known that when you type .EXEC EXPCNV on the website and then you enter /desktop/Braegen14/expcnv.dat you get a weird sound file??? 😛
I was reading through a few comments on this page but the one that RasGold said really caught my eye. he said “I ran my “error console” and found quite a few errors with this info located at the top of the event log:

* LoDRightClickTrap – written by Dylan Engelman a.k.a LordOfDuct”. I then googled the name Dylan Engelman and it came up as a game desinger who created a game called Earthworm Jim. Maybe this holds some clues, like it might be based around that game. Either that or Dylan is working with the studio. Just abit of info if you want to find out this movie before it comes out as much as i do
I think that comment in the code is just giving credit to the person that wrote the “LoDRightClickTrap” code… not really a clue
Very nice post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wished to mention that I’ve truly enjoyed surfing around your weblog posts. After all I will be subscribing to your rss feed and I’m hoping you write again very soon!
