Super 8 Official Trailer is Now Online

The official trailer for Super 8 is now online. Either check out the embedded version above or head on over to Apple (at the link below) and check out the HD versions. It should be much easier to tear this one apart and get a clearer view of what we're looking at, so get digging!

Thanks for the heads up Zavin and BuddhasWarrior.

What Happens When The Counter Ends?

If you've been following the posts today regarding "Super 8" and it's viral campaign, you know that there is somewhat of a countdown going on over at and the big question is, what will the screen show when the countdown ends? Well you don't have to wait until then to find out... kind of.

Someone in an IRC channel associated with unfiction (if you know who please let me know so I can give them credit) managed to download the .swf file from that website and pull out what will happen at the end of the cycle. It doesn't give us any clues as to what really happens next, but you can at least see what the screen will look like at the end of it. So I don't think this is too much of a spoiler of anything. The only thing I can gather from this screenshot is that the "AF" in "AF FILE LIBRARY" may stand for Air Force, which would make my assumption that D. Morris stands for Dan Morris, since he was a Master Sergeant in the Air Force.

And the speculation begins... If you were around for the Cloverfield viral campaign you will remember people finding things in the trailer that weren't there, such as the monster in the smoke. Now I'm not saying that this is one of those cases, as it does resemble a face more than the smoke resembled the monster, but I'm sure many people will start finding things that don't exist in everything that's release or "found" for Super 8. With that being said, take a look at the image above courtesy of Carlton Halpert and make your own judgement.

This screenshot was taken towards the end of the trailer, just before the letters (which spelled out scariest thing i ever saw) are seen on the screen. Now, it does have the features of a human face, but it could also just be something completely different that our mind puts together as a human face when it's paused like this. Either way, I thought it was interesting enough to post up, so check it out and let us know what you think in the comments.

Thanks for the original screenshot/comment Carlton and Alessandra. And thanks to xUBIK for the updated one.

Scariest Thing I Ever Saw

Those guys over at the unfiction forums are all over this just like they were with Cloverfield (and thanks to Yiddleja again for the tip). It looks like there were some letters that flashed during the trailer that have possibly been decoded to say "Scariest Thing I Ever Saw". And of course the first thing we're gonna do is punch that into a web browser and get which seems to have been registered a little over a week after the website was, and by the same registration company.

Here's the letters from the trailer thanks to unfiction user blaqueice:

The website shows a virtual computer of sorts, a PDP-11 actually. There are 2 windows on the screen, the main window is the green screen command prompt interface and behind that is a window that asks if you want to print all pages to default printer. I do not have a printer that I can print to here, but those unfiction guys are way ahead, apparently if you say yes to print you get the following:

Stop posting publicly. I can answer your questions.
I have proof.

As for the green screen, if you follow the prompts and keep pressing "Y" you will eventually end up at a screen with what appears to be a counter. CrispyG4 over at unfiction figured out how long it will take for the counter to even out:

The number ticks every 5 seconds.

134640 parts. Start at 6000 so subtract those 6000 from the total: 128640

Times that by 5, you get 643,200 seconds until the countdown ends.

Divide that by 60, 10720 minutes. Divide THAT by 60, get 179 hours. Which is just around 7 1/2 days. So, probably around Noon on the 15th?

So it looks like, if this is connected, we may get a new reveal or something new around noon on May 15th, 2010. The only other thing that I noticed while playing with the green screens is the name D. Morris 05-FEB-77, so there could be a clue there.

And that's all I have for right now on this. I think it's probably legit and connected to the project based on the domain registration as well as the ip traces back to the same place that Cloverfield's sites were hosted on as well as the official site for Super 8.  I've posted a bunch of screenshots after the jump for those that may not be able to access that page for whatever reason.

UPDATE: It seems as though there's a slight change in the last "countdown" screen that I posted early this morning compared to what it shows now. Instead of only 2 of the lines having text in them, it has now moved onto the 3rd. I've posted a new screenshot after the jump below the previous one so you can see what I'm talking about.

UPDATE 2: The countdown is now on #19 of 20 and I've redone the calculation that was mentioned above and I seem to have come up with a different ending time of 10PM CST tonight or 11PM EST. Someone double check and let me know what you come up with, I could have miscalculated.

UPDATE 3 (6/2/10): A new folder has appeared behind the windows on the site, head on over HERE to discuss.

Super 8 Official Website Launched

The official website for the J.J. Abrams / Steven Spielberg flick has gone live over at

According to the guys over at the red letters that are flashing across the screen say "TITLE:, DATE:, PROCESSED BY KODAK". So nothing too significant there at the moment.
